Home: Week 2

Week 2
Next week will be medical week at the Peterson’s. Jack, Julia and Russ are all going to the dentist on Tuesday. I’m pretty sure that this year, we are going to max out our dental coverage. We’ve got appointments at our family doctor on Friday, so by the end of the week we’ll have a good start on the medical stuff.

Everyone is assimilating well. Jack and Julia are going to Youth Group at our Church and absolutely love it. Our Youth leader had the church kids learn few Russian phrases to make them feel welcome, and Jack and Julia were almost immediately comfortable. When we pick them up they always ask if they can please go again next Sunday. Anyone who has been through Junior High knows how cruel kids can be—it’s really refreshing to see how kind they can be as well.

We’ve decided that adoptive parenting is just like bio parenting in one regard: About half the advice you get and expectations you set from talking to others is right on the money, half is completely wrong, and there is no way to know the difference ahead of time.
We were expecting both kids to be seriously intimidated by America’s sensory overload—it’s clean, bright, and fast-paced. We expected kids who would be afraid of closed doors, the dark, traffic, groups of people, and sleeping in a room by themselves. We were wrong. We initially had all three girls in one room to ease the transition. After a week we casually asked Julia if she would like her own room, and she started jumping up and down and packing her stuff. She’s thrilled. I think it’s the first time she’s had her own space. We brought a map of Kazakhstan with us for Jack’s room, and it is on the wall, but the prime wall space is devoted to a big Spongebob Squarepants poster that he picked out at Walmart. God Bless America!

They like Ravioli (plain please) and really like Hot Dogs. Last week I commented on the “electronics gene” that kids have. I think I found another one—the “Kraft Macaroni and Cheese gene”. It got two thumbs up….then we put sliced up hot dogs in it, and it became the food of the gods. Food consumption seems to be trending upward a bit, and they have gained a pound or two.The unexpected “new” food of the week is : Toast. Jack thinks it s pretty great way to have bread, and the toaster machine is pretty cool too.
